Mites - Part two

A brown dog tick is not dangerous to humans, but it is dangerous for dogs. Dwells everywhere. Particularly active in coastal areas and on the Black Sea coast.

Where do ticks live?

Ticks live in each climatic zone and on all continents. Because ticks prefer wet places, they choose forest ravines, undergrowths, thickets near the banks of streams, flooded meadows, overgrown paths, animal wool, dark warehouses with agricultural products, etc., as their habitat. Individual species are adapted for life in the seas and fresh water reservoirs. Some mites live in houses and apartments, for example, house mites, dust mites, flour mites.

Distribution of ticks.

Having attached to birds or animals, parasites can expand their habitat for many kilometers, although they can overcome only a few meters on their own. Ixodid mites are common in the temperate zone of Eurasia, and taiga and canine parasites can be observed both in Siberia and in the Far East and Baltic regions.

How many live tick?

The lifespan of a mite depends on the species. For example, home dust mites or dust mites live 65-80 days. Other species, for example taiga tick, live up to 4 years. Without food, mites can live from 1 month to 3 years.

Reproduction of ticks. Stages (cycle) of development of ticks.

Most ticks are oviparous, although viviparous species are found. Like all arachnids, ticks have a clear division into females and males. The most interesting life cycle is tracked in bloodsucking species. The following stages of mite development are distinguished:

  • Eggs
  • Larva
  • Nymph
  • Adult individual

Egg ticks.

At the end of spring or early summer, the female tick, saturated with blood, makes clutch of 2.5-3 thousand eggs. What do mite eggs look like? The egg is a fairly large cell relative to the size of the female, consisting of a cytoplasm and a core, and covered with a two-layered shell that is colored in a variety of colors. Eggs of ticks can have a completely different shape - from round or oval to oblate and elongated.

Mite larva. Is the tick of a mite dangerous to humans?

What do the mite larvae look like? Appearing in 2-4 weeks from the egg, the tick mite is similar to its "parents", the only differences are smaller: larvae of some species of mites do not exceed 0.5 mm and resemble poppy seeds in size. In addition, unlike adult mites, larvae have only 3 pairs of limbs.
